Abstract

The asymmetrical organization of the brain continues to fascinate people and to mobilize researchers. The possibility that this asymmetry differs between men and women and the attempt to describe its underlying factors have recently focused research efforts on the role of sexual hormones. The purpose of this paper is to review the conceptions regarding the impact of sexual hormones on cognitive performances, functional asymmetry of the brain and interactions between its hemispheres in the language and visuospatial domaines. Our review leads to the conclusion that hormones actually do impact functional asymmetry and the exchanges between the cerebral hemispheres. Thus, it is now necessary for neuropsychological research, be it concerned or not with gender differences in cerebral organisation for cognition, to take into account these factors better.
