Abstract

Recently we have investigated Vicoa indica, a shrub belonging to a small tribe of the Compositae family. Extraction of V. indica collected near Madras afforded the guaianolide vicolide A (1) and the germacranolide vicolide B (5). Extraction of the same species, gathered in a different region near Pune, yielded another germacranolide, vicolide C (9). The chemical, spectroscopic, and X-ray (for B and C) evidence leading to the structural elucidation of these compounds is presented.
