Abstract

There are currently two working hypotheses as to how ERK is stimulated by EGF signalling. The first suggests a single signal transduction pathway via Ras and the second proposes a dual path through both Ras and Rap1. These hypotheses can be formally represented as biochemical pathway models which in conjunction with the results from laboratory experimentation provide a means to reason about the validity of the competing hypotheses. We employ the Bayesian inferential methodology to objectively assess which hypothesis based model is best supported and it is demonstrated that the experimental evidence is decisive in supporting a dual path topology.
