Abstract

In this third and final TV interview, Jan Čulík speaks to Antonín J. Liehm (92), a major Czech cultural commentator about his life and work in exile in France and in the United States where he worked at universities after the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia, which put a stop to the liberalising Prague Spring. During his work in France and in the USA, A. J. Liehm produced a number of major publications in English about Czech and East European Cinema. He also edited the voluminous annual literary supplement to the bimonthly political publication Listy, which was called Čtení na léto (Summer Reading) and which featured independent Czech literature. He was also the editor of 150 000 slov (150 000 words), a periodical which featured major political and social analytical articles in Czech translation. The purpose of these publications was to make independent information available in communist Czechoslovakia and these publications were smuggled into the country, but after the fall of communism the emigré editors, incuding A.. J. Liehm discovered that the impact of their work in Czechoslovakia was relatively limited. The interview was broadcast by the Czech cable TV station from 17th March, 2017.
