Measurement of exclusive omega electroproduction at HERA

Abstract

The exclusive electroproduction of omega mesons, ep to e omega p, has been studied in the kinematic range 3 lt Q/sup 2/ lt 20 GeV/sup 2/, 40 lt W lt 120 GeV and |t| lt 0.6 GeV/sup 2/ with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 37.7 pb/sup -1/. The omega mesons were identified via the decay omega to pi /sup +/ pi /sup -/ pi /sup 0/. The exclusive cross section in the above kinematic region is sigma /sub ep to e omega p/=0.108+or-0.014(stat.)+or-0.026(syst.) nb. The reaction ep to e phi p, phi to pi /sup +/ pi /sup -/ pi /sup 0/, has also been measured. The cross sections, as well as the ratios sigma /sub gamma *p to omega p// sigma /sub gamma *p to rho 0p/ and sigma /sub gamma *p to omega p// sigma /sub gamma *p to phi p/, are presented as a function of W and Q/sup 2/. Thus, for the first time, the properties of omega electroproduction can be compared to those of rho /sup 0/, phi and J/ psi electroproduction at high W.
