Abstract

Jan Čulík interviews Jiří Holý, Professor of Czech and Comparative Literature at Charles University in Prague and DIrector of the Prague-based Centre of Holocaust Studies about the history of antisemitism in the Czech Lands in the 19th century and in Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic in the 20th century, on the occasion of the publication of the volume "Cizí a blízcí" ("Those who were foreign and those who were close"], a collective publication devoted to the interaction of the Jewish and the majority Czech communities in the Czech Lands over the past centuries. Professor Holý finds that the mechanisms of racism and xenophobia, applied against the Jews, are exactly the same which Europe now uses to express hatred against muslims and immigrants.
