Abstract

The Gospel of John and the Book of Job provide Dostoevsky with paradigms of a theologia gloriae and a theologia exinanitionis, such that neither is ever presented in his writings without reference to the other. The article examines the role of Job in the novel The Brothers Karamazov. It is seen that as well as the representation of the traditional 'patient Job' in the Life of the Elder Zosima', variations on the Job theme are also presented through such characters as Ivan Karamazov and Captain Snegiryov. In these figures Dostoevsky indirectly shows how Job challenges any straightforward theologia gloriae. This supports the view that the dialectic of glory and humiliation is fundamental to Dostoevsky's literary presentation of Christian faith.
