Abstract

The paper addresses the important issue of how an expert makes their knowledge of a topic more consistent. We have developed the INSIGHT methodology and tool which accepts 2 perspectives on a topic from the same expert, and helps the expert make these perspectives more consistent. A case study with 7 experts (ICU consultants) is reported, showing that the 2 perspectives of each expert did become more consistent, and that the differences between the experts also reduced considerably, as a result of using the INSIGHT system. A Bayesian modelling approach has also been applied to the experts’ annotations, which con- firms the overall result of the case study, and suggests some reasons for the remaining differences between the individual experts. The planned further work includes developing a hybrid system, namely a knowledge-based front-end to detect/remove inconsistencies, and a statistics-based inference engine to classify (unknown) instances.
