Abstract

The theory of circular dichroism (CD) is presented including both the magnetic-dipole electric-dipole (E1-M1) and the electric-quadrupole electric-dipole (E1-E2) mechanisms. A survey of the CD and the circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectra of co-ordination compounds follows: the CD of the d-d transitions of transition metal compounds; the CPL of Cr(III) and lanthanide (rare earth) complexes; the CD of internal ligand transitions (exciton coupling); CD and CPL of the charge-transfer spectra of second and third row transition metal polypyridyl complexes and the CD of metal-metal bonded species. The chapter finishes with an account of X-ray Natural Circular Dichroism.
