Abstract
Electric Spirit is a piece for double bass and laptop recorded in 2005 that uses Fells' improvisation framework for live sampling. It builds layers of granulated textures from source materials provided by the bass player, within a broad formal archetype of musical 'growth'. The live sampling framework establishes a feedback loop where iterations of musical material reinforce one another, with the bassist responding to and extending sounds processed and reflected back by the laptop system. The piece was performed at Glasgow's Centre for Contemporary Arts and recorded and released by Iorram Records.
