Abstract
This article deals with the frontispieces of nineteenth-century monographs on Diego Velázquez by these authors: William Stirling (Velazquez and his Works, 1855) , Charles B. Curtis (Velazquez and Murillo, 1883), Gregorio Cruzada Villaamil (Anales de la vida y de las obras de Diego de Silva Velázquez, 1885), Charles Davillier (Mémoire de Velazquez, 1874), Paul Lefort (Velazquez, 1885), Carl Justi (Diego Velazquez und sein Jahrhundert, 1888), R.A.M. Stevenson (The Art of Velasquez, 1895), Walter Armstrong (The Life of Velazquez and The Art of Velazquez, 1896), Aureliano de Beruete (Velazquez, 1898), and Jacinto Octavio Picón (Vida y obra de Don Diego Velázquez, 1899). The choice of illustration for these frontispieces reveals the corresponding author’s historiographical position within the contemporary literature on Diego Velázquez.
