Abstract

Duncan Shanks, one of the finest Scottish landscape painters of the last 50 years, has dedicated his life to an understanding and knowledge of the Clyde Valley, a beautiful and fertile area close to Scotland's largest city. A prolific draughtsman and disciplined painter, he has over the last 20 years worked on a number of critically acclaimed solo exhibitions exploring the different subject matters at the heart of his art, from the Clyde's Falls to Tinto Hill. This is the first in-depth analysis of the working methods and approach to art of one the nation's most talented contemporary landscape painters, based on more than 100 sketchbooks spanning over 45 years.
