“o ire” is a composition for solo laptop and ambisonics, based on live manipulated field and archival recordings presented through ‘waves’ of spatialisation - inward/outward, here/there, through and between. The performance comprises an improvised exploration of the spaces and surfaces inherent in a collection of old vinyl and gramophone records of my father's, and old dictaphone tape recordings found from my childhood, combined in various ways with field recordings and found sounds drawn from a range of locations in Glasgow and Scotland more widely. A sense of nostalgia and place is explored through these old and 'anecdotal' recordings, and the layering of fragments, textures and resonances. At the same time, the media themselves are explored for their other hidden spaces and voices that are waiting to be revealed. The title of the piece is a redacted version of the title of one of the gramophone records used. Technically, the piece is realised using Max with the ICST ambisonic tools and the Mira extension running on an Apple iPad. It also requires an arduino based light sensitive controller I developed, and a Behringer BCR2000 control surface. The performance is open in duration but usually lasts about 40 minutes. "o ire" was premièred at the Institute of Electronic Music in Graz in January 2015.
