Abstract
On functional, cultural and ideological evaluation of alphabets: from the history of the debates on some Cyrillic letters.The paper considers a range of evaluative approaches to alphabets – from seeing the letter names of the Old Church Slavonic as a spiritual message of its founder to the legislation banning the Latin alphabet for languages of Russia as a potential threat to the state integrity.
