Abstract

his chapter explores the experiences of young adults in the new economy. It focuses on employment, unemployment, and precarious forms of work, highlighting the consequences of these changes for young people, both in terms of their impact on objective outcomes and in relation to subjective impacts. It argues that high unemployment and precarious forms of employment are not temporary phenomenon linked to recession but are part of a long-term trend involving the growth of low-skill jobs and part-time employment among young people: trends that may hit less-advantaged youth hardest but which also impact on those who have invested heavily in education and training. These trends have serious consequences for young people’s well-being.
