Abstract

This chapter will consider the crucial role of Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) and the part it has in supporting early development and learning. It will look at some of the developments that have taken place in recent times, particularly with respect to expansion of provision and policy. Play as the primary medium of delivery of experiences through which children can develop and the needs of the child will be considered. How this information can be used by staff to create appropriate learning opportunities in order to meet the needs of the child will be examined .The roles of both adults and children in constructing the learning environment and opportunities for learning and assessment in ELC will also be explored to determine their importance and use in the learning process.
