Abstract

A comparison between artist Matthew Barney's use of Harry Houdini as an alter-ego emblematising an imagined escape (of sorts) from normative masculine identity, and Houdini's own complex performance of a masculine embodiment deeply shaped by a modernity that it never escapes for long.
